Wordle Hints for Puzzle #1956, October 27, 2026

Six hints below, each one a step closer to the answer. Hint 1 gives you the vowel count. Hint 6 is the full definition. Stop as soon as one gives you enough to go back and guess. The answer stays hidden in its own section until you choose to see it.

1
How Many Vowels Are in Today Wordle?
Two vowels, counting A, E, I, O, U.

Todays answer has two vowels. That is right at the average for Wordle. If your opener returned mostly grey, you either missed both vowels entirely or hit them in the wrong positions. Two vowels leaves a decent spread of possible words, so the next hints matter.

2
Does today’s Wordle have a double letter
No. Every letter in todays answer is different.

No repeated letters today. All five positions hold a unique character. That rules out a whole category of traps and means your elimination logic from grey tiles applies cleanly. If a letter went grey, it is gone.

3
What Letter Does Today Wordle Start With?
It starts with B.

Todays answer starts with B. B starts about 7.6% of all Wordle answers, so a reasonable chunk of the candidate pool. If your opener included B and it came back grey, you already know this is not the puzzle for you. If not, now you have the first letter locked.

4
What Letter Does Today Wordle End With?
It ends with O.

Todays answer ends with O. That is a less common ending for Wordle answers which is part of why this one rated Hard. Combined with what the earlier hints gave you, the shape of the word is getting tighter.

5
What Is the Second Letter?
The second letter is I.

Todays Wordle answer has I as the second letter. Second position is one of the harder spots to confirm through normal guessing. Most openers skip it. Knowing it is I puts you close.

6
Definition Clue
A game where players match called numbers on cards, and a shout when you win it.

Both a noun and an exclamation. You have probably played it or at least heard someone call it out. With B I _ _ O and this definition, there is only one word that fits.

Puzzle #1956  ·  Tuesday, October 27, 2026  ·  Confirmed by Alex Mercer

The Answer: Meaning and Word Story

Todays answer works as both a noun and an exclamation. As a noun it names a game where players mark off called numbers on a card, first to complete a line wins. As an exclamation it is what you shout when that happens. Most people learn the word well before they ever play the game.

The word has been in English since at least the 1930s, though its exact origin is still debated. Some trace it to a British slang term for brandy. Others say it was adapted from an earlier name for the game itself. What is clear is that it crossed into everyday use as a general shout of success, the same way people say jackpot or eureka without thinking about the original context.

NYT testers averaged 5.8 guesses. Hard is the right rating. The word is familiar but the ending is uncommon for Wordle answers. Players who land on the right first letter early still face multiple lookalikes sharing the same ending pattern. Burning guesses on the wrong one before finding the right word is exactly how 5.8 happens.

How Hard is the Wordle Today?

Fairly Easy Medium Medium+ Hard ✓
FactorDetail
Word familiarityVery familiar word. The difficulty comes from the uncommon O ending and the lookalikes it shares that ending with.
Avg solve5.8 guesses (NYT testers). Hard rating is justified.

NYT tester panel averaged 5.8 guesses for Puzzle #1956. Hard is Alex editorial rating based on that figure.

⚠

The ending is the main trap. Once players narrow down the first two letters, they still face multiple lookalikes sharing the same pattern. Each one ends the same way. Without a diagnostic guess to separate them, players end up burning attempts one at a time. That is exactly where the 5.8 average comes from.

How Puzzle #1956 Was Solved: A 4-Guess Path

Every puzzle on this page gets played before hints go up. Four guesses today. ORATE is the usual opener and it came back with just one yellow O and nothing else. That left a lot of ground to cover but the path worked out.

Guess 1 (BOLUS): B came back green at position 1. O returned yellow at position 2, in the word but not there. L, U and S all grey. Two letters confirmed from the first guess, not a bad start.

Guess 2 (BACON): B green at position 1 again. A and C grey. O came back yellow at position 4, still not in the right spot. N returned yellow at position 5. Three letters confirmed now, B locked, O and N somewhere in the word.

Guess 3 (BROND): B green at position 1. R grey. O yellow at position 3, moving it forward but still not right. N yellow at position 4. D grey. The word has B at the start, O somewhere in positions 4 or 5, and N somewhere in positions 1 through 3 or 5.

Guess 4 (BINGO): All five green. B, I, N, G and O in order. Four guesses total. Once BROND pushed O and N into focus, BINGO was the word that fit everything. Clean finish.

Puzzle #1955   Monday, October 26, 2026

Yesterday’s answer is an adjective. It describes someone deeply into a niche subject, the kind of passion that goes well past casual interest. Comic books, mechanical keyboards, detailed film critiques at 11 PM. E is the only letter from the ten most common Wordle letters, and it appears twice. That combination left a lot of openers with almost nothing to work with. NYT testers averaged 4.6 guesses.

Repeated lettersYes. E appears twice, positions 2 and 3.

Best Wordle Starting Words

Your opening guess is the only one you make with zero information. A good starter covers letters that show up most often across the Wordle answer list, so whatever tiles come back, green, yellow or grey, you have learned something useful. These are the openers that consistently deliver the most information from a single row. Full data and rankings are on the Wordle start words page.

Top Openers by Data

Scores are WordleBot ratings out of 100. The top three all score 99 or above. The MIT-computed optimal word sits below them with the lowest proven average across all puzzles.

SLATE
WordleBot score: 99
Tests S, L, A, T and E in one guess, five of the most frequent letters in Wordle answers. S starts nearly 15% of all answers and E appears in over 40% of them. A solid all-round opener with no wasted slots.
CRANE
WordleBot score: 99
R appears in about 38% of all Wordle answers, making it one of the highest-value consonants to test early. CRANE pairs it with C, A, N and E, five different letters covering a wide range of common patterns.
TRACE
WordleBot current top pick
WordleBot number one recommendation since its January 2024 update. Tests the same high-value letters as CRANE in a different order, and the -ACE, -ARE and -ATE endings cover a significant chunk of the answer pool.
STARE
Consistently strong since 2022
S is the most common starting letter in Wordle answers. E is the most common ending letter, showing up in about 20% of all words. STARE tests both of those positions while also covering T, A and R.
SALET
MIT algorithm winner, 3.421 avg guesses
Computed by MIT researchers as the mathematically optimal Wordle opener, averaging 3.421 guesses across the entire answer list. Not a well-known word, but if your goal is the lowest possible average, this is it.
ADIEU
Avoid, not in the answer list
ADIEU tests four vowels but only one consonant, and it does not appear in the Wordle answer pool at all. Vowel coverage sounds useful in theory, but Wordle answers rarely need more than two vowels confirmed early. You waste consonant slots you cannot afford to lose.

WordleBot scores verified September 2026. SALET 3.421-guess average from MIT computational analysis of the full Wordle answer list.

Wordle Tips: How to Consistently Solve in 3 or 4 Guesses

These Wordle tips come from playing the puzzle every day. They are not theory, each one comes from a specific pattern that shows up repeatedly across hundreds of puzzles. Today’s puzzle is a good example for several of them.

1
Read all five letters before you decide on a second guess

After your opening word returns feedback, resist the urge to guess immediately. Look at every piece of information, which letters are confirmed, which positions are ruled out, which letters are completely off the board. Players who guess reactively often spend a turn testing a letter that a moment of thought would have ruled out.

2
Grey tiles are as useful as green ones

Every grey tile crosses one letter off your list. In a 26-letter alphabet, eliminating five letters with one guess narrows the remaining candidates significantly. Players who ignore grey feedback and reuse eliminated letters are not getting full value from each guess. Track what is off the board as carefully as what is on it.

3
Move yellow letters, do not just keep them in the same spot

A yellow tile tells you two things: the letter is in the word, and it is not in the position you just tried. Both matter. Players sometimes confirm a yellow letter and then test it in the same position again, which burns a guess without learning anything new. Put it somewhere else in your next guess.

4
Check for repeated letters before your last couple of guesses

About 31% of Wordle answers contain a repeated letter. When your known letters seem to fit but no complete word comes to mind, repeated letters are often the missing piece. Today’s puzzle is a good example, when the shape of the word feels right but nothing fits, a repeated letter is almost always the missing piece. If a word shape seems right but something is off, ask whether one letter appears twice.

5
Use a diagnostic guess when multiple words still fit

If you have confirmed several letters but three or four different words could still be the answer, say BOUND, FOUND, HOUND and MOUND all remain live, consider spending a guess on a word that tests the uncertain first letters even if that word is not the answer. One diagnostic guess can eliminate three candidates at once, which is more efficient than guessing blind and hoping.

6
Know common ending patterns

Certain letter combinations appear at the end of Wordle answers far more often than others. Words ending in -LY, -ER, -ED, -ST and -RY cover a large portion of the answer pool. If you have confirmed the first two or three letters but the ending is unclear, these patterns give you a shortlist to work from rather than guessing at random.

7
Wordle answers rarely end in S

This one surprises people. In standard English, S ends roughly 31% of five-letter words. In the Wordle answer list, fewer than 2% of answers end in S. NYT deliberately avoids plural nouns and third-person verb forms. If you are down to two candidates and one ends in S, the other is almost always the answer.

How to Play Wordle

Wordle gives you six attempts to find a hidden five-letter word. One new puzzle every day, same word for every player worldwide. Free to play at NYT Games, no account needed.

The Rules: Step by Step

  1. Open the daily Wordle at NYT Games. No subscription needed for the daily puzzle. The new puzzle goes live at midnight in your local timezone, so if you play past midnight, you are already on the next day word.
  2. Type any valid five-letter word from the 12,972-word input dictionary and press Enter. Starting with a word that covers common letters, SLATE, CRANE or TRACE, gives you the most useful feedback from row one.
  3. Read the tile colors. Green means right letter, right spot. Yellow means right letter, wrong spot. Grey means that letter has no more copies in the word. Each guess gives you new information to work with.
  4. Use what you learned to build a sharper next guess. Keep green letters in place, move yellow letters to new positions, and avoid reusing grey letters. Most improvement happens in guesses two and three.
  5. Keep going until you find the word or use all six attempts. If you do not solve it in six, the answer reveals itself and your streak resets to zero.
  6. Share your result. After you finish, Wordle generates a grid of colored squares that shows your solve path without revealing any letters. Posting it lets other players see how you did without spoiling the word. The format shows the puzzle number and your guess count, for example, Wordle 1950 4/6.

What the Colors Mean

W
Green tile Right letter, right position. Keep it in that exact spot in every guess that follows.
W
Yellow tile Right letter, wrong position. The letter is in the answer, move it to a different slot in your next guess.
W
Grey tile No more copies of this letter in the word. Drop it from future guesses. One exception: if the answer has a repeated letter, one copy can go grey while another copy is yellow or green.

What Is Hard Mode?

Hard mode adds one rule: every confirmed letter must appear in every subsequent guess. A green S at position 1 means all future guesses must start with S. A yellow R must appear somewhere in the next word.

The problem is the rhyme trap. If you have confirmed the pattern _OUND with two guesses left, you are stuck choosing between BOUND, FOUND, HOUND, MOUND, POUND, ROUND, SOUND and WOUND. In normal mode you can spend a guess testing several of those first letters at once. Hard mode removes that option and forces a blind pick.

Is Using Wordle Hints Cheating?

Wordle is a single-player game. There is no opponent, no prize and no one else affected by your choices. The r/wordle community view, consistent over three years: using a hint to save a meaningful streak is fine, using hints every day removes most of the challenge, using them after a genuine attempt is completely reasonable. How much help you want is up to you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wordle

Questions Wordle players actually search for, gathered from Reddit, Quora and three years of puzzle discussions.

What is Wordle?

+

Wordle is a free daily word puzzle from The New York Times. You get six chances to guess a hidden five-letter word. Each guess comes back with colored tiles that tell you which letters are correct and where they go. Everyone worldwide plays the same word on the same day.

Does everyone get the same Wordle word?

+

Yes, everyone gets the same word on the same day regardless of where they are. The puzzle resets at midnight in your local timezone, so playing just after midnight puts you on the next day puzzle already.

What is the best starting word for Wordle?

+

WordleBot ranks TRACE as the top pick right now, with SLATE and CRANE both scoring 99 out of 100. If you want the mathematically lowest average, MIT researchers computed SALET at 3.421 guesses. The starting words section on this page has the full breakdown with reasons for each one.

How many guesses do you get in Wordle?

+

You get six guesses per puzzle. If the word is not found by guess six, the answer reveals itself and the streak resets. Hard mode gives you the same six attempts but locks in every confirmed letter for all future guesses in that round.

Can the same letter appear twice in a Wordle answer?

+

Yes, it can. Around 31% of all Wordle answers have at least one repeated letter. Todays answer does not have a repeated letter, but it is worth knowing for future puzzles. When a letter appears twice, one copy can return grey while the other shows yellow or green. A grey tile does not always mean the letter is completely off the board.

What do the tile colors mean in Wordle?

+

Green means that letter is in the right spot, keep it there. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position, move it somewhere else. Grey means no more copies of that letter are needed. The How to Play section on this page shows all three with visual examples.

What is Wordle Hard Mode?

+

Hard mode adds one rule: every confirmed letter has to appear in all future guesses. A green letter stays in the same spot. A yellow letter goes somewhere else in the next word. The downside is you can no longer spend a guess purely for elimination. Switch it on in the settings menu, but only before your first guess of the day.

Why do Wordle answers rarely end in S?

+

NYT deliberately left out most plural nouns and third-person verb forms when they built the answer list. In standard English around 31% of five-letter words end in S. In Wordle that number drops to under 2%. So if you are stuck between two candidates and one ends in S, the other is almost always the answer.

Does Wordle repeat past answers?

+

Yes, it does now. NYT started bringing back old answers in February 2026. The original game from Josh Wardle had no repeats, but NYT removed that restriction after taking over. The past answers archive on this site marks every repeated word with x2 next to it.

Is Wordle free to play?

+

The daily puzzle is free and no account is needed to play. The archive for replaying past puzzles sits behind a NYT Games subscription, but the daily game, hard mode, stats and result sharing are all free.

Can you play past Wordle puzzles?

+

Not for free once the puzzle has reset. The free version gives no way back once midnight passes. A NYT Games subscription unlocks the full archive. If you missed a recent puzzle, the last 19 answers are in the table on this page and the complete history from puzzle 0 is on the past Wordle answers page.

How do you share your Wordle result?

+

After you finish the puzzle, Wordle gives you a share button that generates a grid of colored squares. The grid shows your guess count and the color pattern but no letters at all, so it is completely spoiler-free. Most players post it on social media or send it in group chats. The format looks like: Wordle 1952 4/6, followed by the emoji grid.
