Wordle Solver: Filter by Green, Yellow and Grey Letters

Stuck on today’s puzzle? Enter your green, yellow and grey tiles and the solver filters the full Wordle answer list down to every word that still fits. Works for normal and hard mode. If you just want a nudge rather than a full filter, the Wordle hints for today are on the homepage.

How to Use the Wordle Solver

The solver does not connect to Wordle or the NYT. You enter what your tiles showed you, and it filters the word list to whatever still fits. Here is the exact process.

STEP 1
Play your guess on NYT Wordle
Open the real Wordle game at nytimes.com and make your first guess. Look at the tile colors it returns.
STEP 2
Enter green letters by position
Any letter that turned green goes into the matching position slot above. Position 1 is the first letter, position 5 is the last.
STEP 3
Add yellow letters with their wrong position
For each yellow letter, add a row. Enter the letter and tick every position it appeared in so the solver knows where it cannot go.
STEP 4
Type all grey letters together
Any letter that went grey goes into the grey field. Type them all in one go, no spaces needed.
STEP 5
Click Find Words
The solver cross-checks all three filters and returns every word that still fits. The best next guess shows at the top. You can also use it to work through patterns from past Wordle answers.
STEP 6
Repeat after each guess
Play the suggested word on Wordle, then come back and add the new tile results. The list narrows with each round until the answer is clear.

When Does a Wordle Solver Actually Help?

Most players do not need a Wordle helper on every puzzle. There are specific situations where filtering the word list saves real guesses.

SITUATION 1
You are stuck in a rhyme trap
You know four letters but the fifth could be B, F, H, M, P or R. Six words all fit. In normal mode the solver tells you the best diagnostic guess. In hard mode it at least narrows which of those six is most likely.
SITUATION 2
You are on guess 5 or 6
One wrong guess here ends a streak. If two or three words still fit and you cannot tell which is more likely, the solver shows the full shortlist so you can make an informed pick rather than a blind one.
SITUATION 3
The word feels unfamiliar
You have confirmed four letters but cannot think of a five-letter word that fits. The solver does the vocabulary work and shows everything valid that matches your tiles.
SITUATION 4
You suspect a repeated letter
About 31% of Wordle answers have a repeated letter. If your tiles look right but nothing clicks, the solver catches repeated-letter words that human pattern matching tends to miss. If a word shape seems right but nothing fits, this is almost always why.
SITUATION 5
Post-game analysis
Many players use the solver after finishing to see how many words were left at each stage and whether a better guess existed. It is one of the more useful ways to improve without affecting your actual score.
SITUATION 6
Protecting a long streak
If you are genuinely stuck on the last guess with two equally valid options, using the solver to check the shortlist is a reasonable call. The puzzle is single-player. There is no rule against it.

What the Tile Colours Mean

Wordle gives you three types of feedback after every guess. Understanding each one is what the solver is built around.

A
Green — correct letter, correct position
That letter is in the answer and in exactly that spot. Every remaining candidate must have it there.
R
Yellow — correct letter, wrong position
That letter is in the answer but sits somewhere else. The solver keeps only words that contain it in a different position.
E
Grey — letter not in the answer
That letter does not appear anywhere in the answer. All words containing it are removed from the candidate list.

One exception worth knowing: if you guess a word with two of the same letter, one can go grey while the other is yellow or green. That means the letter appears exactly once in the answer, not that it is absent. Enter the grey copy into the grey field as usual.

Hard Mode and the Wordle Solver

Hard mode forces you to use every confirmed letter in every subsequent guess. You cannot play an exploratory word that ignores a green or yellow tile you already found. Switch to Hard Mode in the solver above and it will only show words that obey this rule.

The rhyme trap problem in hard mode

Hard mode creates a situation called the rhyme trap. If you confirm four letters early and the fifth could be several different things — say you know the word ends in IGHT — you are forced to guess NIGHT, LIGHT, FIGHT, MIGHT one by one. In normal mode you could play a word like FLAME that tests the missing first letters all at once without needing to be the answer. Hard mode removes that option.

The way to avoid the trap is to test possible first letters before all four other positions are locked in green. If you suspect an IGHT ending after two guesses, use guess three to probe letters like F, L, M and N before committing. Once all four are green you have no choice but to guess one by one. For more opening-word options, see the best Wordle starting words breakdown.

Best opening word for hard mode

TRACE is the strongest hard mode opener. Five high-frequency letters, positions that confirm quickly, and it does not lock you into forced paths early. Once you have green and yellow feedback from TRACE, your second guess has real direction.

Does the repeated letter rule change in hard mode?

No. The repeated letter behaviour is the same in both modes. If a letter appears twice in the answer and you only guessed it once, one copy can go grey while the other shows yellow or green. Enter the grey copy into the grey field as usual. The solver handles this correctly in both normal and hard mode.

Is Using a Wordle Solver Cheating?

This comes up constantly in Wordle communities. The short answer is: it depends on how you play and who you play with.

PLAYING SOLO
No rules say you cannot
Wordle is a single-player game. There is no opponent and no prize. NYT has no written rule against using a word filter. How much help you want is your call. Most people who use solvers use them on their last one or two guesses, not from the start.
PLAYING WITH FRIENDS
Agree on the rules first
If you compare scores daily with a group, using a solver when others do not is an unfair advantage. The fix is simple: agree upfront whether it is allowed. Many groups allow checking a word list but draw the line at looking up the actual answer.
MOST COMMON USE
Last resort on guess 5 or 6
The majority of players who use a Wordle helper use it only when genuinely stuck with one or two guesses left. Using it to pick between two words you already narrowed down yourself feels different from using it from guess one.
POST-GAME
Completely accepted
Using the solver after you finish to see what options you had is widely considered fine. It is how a lot of players learn to read the board better over time and spot repeated letters or rhyme traps before they cost a guess.

Wordle Solver FAQ

Does this solver connect to Wordle or the NYT?

+

No. The solver has no connection to Wordle or the New York Times. It is a standalone filter that runs entirely in your browser. You tell it what your tiles showed and it filters the word list. No data is sent anywhere.

Is using a Wordle solver cheating?

+

Wordle is single-player with no official rules against using a filter tool. Most people use it on guess 5 or 6 when genuinely stuck, not from the start. If you play competitively with friends, agree upfront whether it is allowed. Post-game use to analyse your options is widely considered completely fine.

What is the difference between answers only and all valid words?

+

Answers only shows the roughly 2,309 words that can actually be the daily answer. All valid words includes the full 12,972 word guess dictionary, which contains many unusual words that Wordle will accept as a guess but will never use as the solution. Answers only is the right setting for most players.

Why does the solver return no results?

+

Almost always because a letter is listed as both grey and green or yellow at the same time. Check that no letter appears in both the grey field and one of the position boxes. If a letter went grey in one guess but green in a later guess, the green overrides it — remove it from grey.

How does the best next guess work?

+

From the remaining candidates, the solver picks the word that covers the most untested high-frequency letters. It is not a guaranteed solve — it is the word most likely to give you the most useful new information on your next guess.

Does the solver work for NYT Wordle hard mode?

+

Yes. Switch to Hard Mode using the toggle at the top of the solver. In hard mode the results only include words that use every confirmed green and yellow letter you have entered, which matches what Wordle requires of your guesses.

Can I use this for past Wordle puzzles?

+

Yes, the solver works for any puzzle regardless of date. If you want to look up a specific past answer directly, the past Wordle answers page has every puzzle from puzzle 0 to yesterday.

What is the best starting word for Wordle?

+

SLATE, CRANE and TRACE all score 99 out of 100 on WordleBot. The gap between them is less than one tenth of a guess on average, so pick whichever you can remember and focus your attention on reading the board after it.

Can the solver handle repeated letters?

+

Yes. About 31% of Wordle answers contain a repeated letter. The solver filters correctly for these cases. If one copy of a letter went grey and another went yellow or green, enter the grey copy into the grey field as normal and the solver will still return words where that letter appears once.

Does NYT Wordle repeat past answers now?

+

Yes, since February 2026. NYT started recycling old answers so a word that appeared in 2022 can appear again. The solver word list reflects the full answer pool including repeated words. If you want to check which words have already been used, the past Wordle answers archive has every puzzle logged from puzzle 0 to yesterday.
